Dr. DivX for Mac Editor's Review
Dr. DivX is a free (Open Source) utility which can encode video files with DivX compression. The application requires a DivX Pro installation in order to use it. Basically, Dr. DivX is just a wrapper which uses the DivX installation in order to process your video material.
The interface is pretty simple and it allows you to easily make an input list. Dr. DivX supports batch processing, so you can use multiple files. The program can be set up pretty easily as the interface is well designed. You have quick access to settings like: video presets, pre-processing, codec, and audio just by clicking the 'Advanced' button.
The processing is split into couple of actions: the audio encoding and the video encoding. Dr. DivX makes them separately. The whole process takes some time if the video file is large. The processing power of your CPU has a major impact upon the global performance. However, the DivX doesn't have full support for multi-core machines as it used more than a single core, but it didn't use the whole available power.
The resulted file was quite small even though I used high quality settings for the video stream and medium quality for the audio stream. The DivX codec delivers good performance at high compression rate.
The output files are DivX certified. This means that you can play them on any standalone player which has the DivX certifications.
Pluses: it allows you to easily create video files which use the DivX compression, the output files are playable on certified home theaters, the application has a quite good performance.
Drawbacks / flaws: the codec doesn't have full support for multi-core machines.
In conclusion: Dr. DivX is a great application which is way much better than the encoding utility provided into the DivX Pro for Mac.
